The oldest surface people ever wrote on, thin enough to slide into a pocket, and empty again whenever you want it.
See what to do with itThe ink sits on the surface. There are no fibres here for it to soak into, so nothing is ever absorbed, and what you write stays a thin layer lying on top of the sheet.
What holds it there is texture. Ground limestone makes the surface finely rough, far too fine to feel, and wet ink settles into that roughness. As the water leaves, the colour stays keyed into it. Give it about a minute and you can run a finger across it and nothing moves.
Then water gets it back off again. That is the same fact told twice: the ink never went anywhere, so it never has to stay. Which pen you use decides how easily it comes off, and that turns out to be the only thing you have to get right.

It is waterproof. It is hard to tear. It rolls up and goes flat again. It takes writing on both sides, and it takes it again after you have wiped it, without wearing out the way a sheet of paper does after one eraser.
The surface is smooth and cool, closer to a pebble than to paper. The pen glides instead of catching, which is the part most people notice first and expect least.
Wet the back of a sheet and press it against glass, a window, a whiteboard or a flipchart stand. It holds, it does not curl, and it moves whenever you want it somewhere else. Pins work too, the material does not tear out around them.
Any flat surface in a room becomes usable this way, without tape, without glue, without anything left behind.
Three kinds of pen, three different experiences.
Heat erasable comes off most easily. On this surface you are not erasing it with heat at all, you are lifting a thin layer of ink off a surface it never bonded to, so a damp cloth is enough.
Water based felt pens write beautifully here and hold well once dry. They also hold better than a cloth can handle, which is where most first attempts go wrong.
Permanent pens stay. That is worth having on purpose: the front of a card can keep what is on it while the back stays rewritable.
A damp cloth suits heat erasable ink and small corrections. Used on felt pen it re-wets the ink and then drags it, so instead of clearing a surface you spread a shadow of it across the sheet.
A water bath is the one to know about. Put cards, notes or whole sheets into water. The ink releases evenly, with nothing pushing it sideways, and what you lift out is a blank surface again. No scrubbing, no shadow, no corner that stayed grey. It is the single best thing about handling this material and it is the part nobody sees coming.
Heat erasable for anything cleared often and quickly. Water based felt for work that stays up for a while and gets cleared in one go. Permanent for the side of something you want to keep, never for the side you want back.
A whiteboard marker or a permanent pen on a surface you wanted back is the one real mistake here, and it is usually recoverable. Nail polish remover or alcohol on a cloth lifts most of it, because the ink is sitting on the surface like everything else. Test on a corner first, work gently, and treat it as a rescue rather than as a routine.
In a dye garden, colour is something you grow. Hibiscus, marigold, safflower: the plants go in the ground, the colour comes out of them, and there is no factory anywhere in that sentence.
Colour made that way goes onto this surface, and it comes off it again the same way everything else does. A pigment that grew in soil, sitting on ground limestone, lifted off with water.
We are part of a network of dye gardens, and this is the piece of the work we are most curious about. It is not a product, there is nothing to buy here, and it is the direction that would make the whole thing complete.
Sixty percent of this sheet is limestone. Forty percent is HDPE, a plastic, and part of that HDPE has been recycled already. It is made in a dry process: no tree, no water in the process, no chlorine bleach. The material is Cradle to Cradle Certified at Silver level.
The gain is in the reuse. One sheet standing in for hundreds of single use ones over years is where the difference is made, not in what happens to it at the end.
At the end it goes into residual waste, not into paper recycling. In the open, under sunlight, HDPE breaks down into microplastic. That is why nothing on this site calls this material biodegradable, compostable or plastic free, and why the disposal line is stated rather than buried.
